Michigan's new, citizen-led redistricting process is fair, impartial, and transparent and will give Michigan voters better maps that keep our communities intact.

We need Michiganders from all backgrounds and communities to participate in the process to make sure that future election maps are by and for the people.

What was the process like before?

Before Michigan voters passed the redistricting reform amendment in 2018, politicians used their redistricting power to rig elections in their favor. They used big data and advanced computer programs to carve up and skew our communities behind closed doors with no opportunity for public input or oversight.

This tactic — known as partisan “gerrymandering” — allowed Michigan politicians to choose their own voters, instead of voters choosing their politicians.

How did we fix it?

A group of everyday citizens knew the old redistricting process was wrong and unfair and took action.

In 2018, more than 5,000 volunteers across Michigan worked to pass Proposal 2 to create an Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission that put voters - not politicians - in charge of drawing our election district maps.

Now what?

Now what?

On November 6, 2018, Michiganders voted overwhelmingly to end partisan gerrymandering and to establish an Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission that will draw Michigan’s state Senate, state House, and Congressional election district maps.

The Voters Not Politicians Education Fund is leading education and outreach efforts around the state to ensure that our new map-drawing process is actually of, by and for the people.

Help us support:

  • A Commission that is diverse demographically and geographically and representative of the state
  • A map-drawing process that is fair, impartial, and transparent
  • An inclusive and accessible process where all voters feel heard

Together, we can make sure that Michiganders -- regardless of their political party, whether they live in a rural or urban community, or any other affiliation --  are confident that future election district maps fairly represent voters of our state.

Together, we can un-rig our elections and restore Michigan’s faith in democracy along the way.
